Koutoubia minaret and the snow-capped Atlas

Founded in the 11th century by the Almoravids, Marrakech gave its name to Morocco. Its medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985, revolves around Jemaa el-Fna square, which comes alive every evening with storytellers, Gnawa musicians and grill stalls.

Don’t miss

  • The Koutoubia minaret, the city’s landmark since the 12th century
  • Bahia Palace and its painted cedar ceilings
  • Ben Youssef Madrasa, a masterpiece of zellige and carved stucco
  • Majorelle Garden and its famous blue
  • The dyers’, metalworkers’ and carpet souks

Beyond the ramparts, Guéliz is full of cafés and galleries, while the Palmeraie is home to hotels and villas. Marrakech is also the best base for exploring: the Atlas is an hour away, the Agafay desert 40 minutes and the ocean three hours.
