What you’ll do
When Marrakech swelters, Essaouira breathes with the trade wind. This day trip takes you to the old Mogador, with its UNESCO-listed medina and its port where blue boats land sardines and sea bream.
The road
Three hours across the Chiadma plain, with a stop at a women’s argan cooperative and, more often than not, a photo of goats up in the argan trees.
In Essaouira
- One-hour guided walk in the medina (private tour: 2 hours with a local guide): Moulay Hassan square, the mellah, spice souks and thuya-wood marquetry workshops.
- A stroll along the Skala de la Kasbah, its bronze cannons and the view of the Purpuraires islands.
- The fishing port and boatyard where wooden boats are still built.
- Free time for grilled fish at the port, art galleries or a walk on the long beach.
Back in Marrakech around 7:30 pm. Bring a jacket: even in August the wind makes late afternoons cool.
