Essaouira’s sea wall facing the ocean

Laid out in the 18th century by a French architect for Sultan Sidi Mohammed ben Abdallah, Essaouira combines a grid plan, Vauban-style ramparts and whitewashed lanes. Its medina has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001.

The port is still the heart of the town: blue boats, the morning fish auction and grilled fish served at open-air tables. From the Skala de la Kasbah, lined with bronze cannons, the view reaches the Purpuraires islands. Thuya-wood marquetry workshops and art galleries fill the old mansions.

The road from Marrakech crosses the Chiadma plain and its argan trees, where goats sometimes climb into the branches. The almost constant wind keeps the town cool in summer and makes it a well-known kitesurfing spot.
