What you’ll do

Toubkal rises to 4,167 metres: the highest peak in Morocco and North Africa. In summer the ascent needs no mountaineering technique, but good fitness and sensible acclimatisation. In two days, it’s a real challenge.

Day 1 — Imlil (1,740 m) → refuge (3,207 m)

About 5–6 hours of walking and 1,470 m of ascent. The trail follows the Aït Mizane valley through the village of Aremd and the shrine of Sidi Chamharouch. Mules carry the bags to the refuge. Hot dinner and a night in a dormitory.

Day 2 — Summit (4,167 m) → Imlil

Wake up around 4 am and set off by head torch. 3–4 hours of climbing over scree to the summit, marked by a metal pyramid, with views over the whole Atlas and, on clear days, towards the Sahara. Back to the refuge for lunch, then down to Imlil (4 h). Transfer to Marrakech in the evening.

Guiding and seasons

A licensed mountain guide is required beyond Imlil. From April to October the ascent is a demanding hike. From December to March, snow means crampons and ice axe (provided) and some experience walking on snow. The shared group is limited to 10 people.

FAQ

Do I need mountaineering experience?

Not in summer: it’s a demanding hike. In winter, some experience with crampons is recommended.

Is altitude sickness a risk?

It can appear above 3,000 m. Drink plenty, climb slowly and tell your guide about headaches or nausea.

Can Toubkal be done in 3 days?

Yes, on request as a private trek: an extra night in Imlil or at the refuge helps acclimatisation.
