The Drâa palm groves and a first taste of the Sahara in two days from Marrakech.

Travellers with a camel in the Zagora desert

The Drâa Valley unrolls one of Morocco’s longest palm groves over more than 100 km, dotted with ksour and kasbahs. At its end, Zagora is famous for its “Timbuktu 52 days” sign — by camel — a reminder of the caravan era.

The Zagora desert is mostly stony, with a few lines of dunes such as those at Tinfou. It is less spectacular than Erg Chebbi, but half the distance: the right choice for a 2-day tour with a night in camp, a camel ride and a starry sky.

If big sand dunes are your priority, we recommend Merzouga in 3 days instead — see our comparison guide.
